Business Process Modelling

Client background

Our client was a global interdealer broker that employed c. 10,000 people.

The challenge

As part of a programme of work to achieve compliance with the FCA operational resilience regulation, the firm was required to undertake process mapping for its identified Important Business Services across three legal entities falling within scope of the regulation.

The regulation required each Important Business Service to be mapped to identify processes operated in delivering the service, as well as the dependencies on people, technology, equipment, and information consumed by the service.

The mapping was required at an appropriate level of granularity to identify any vulnerabilities in operational resilience of each Important Business Service, as well as supporting the operational resilience scenario testing of the services.

Our approach and contribution

As part of the wider Operational Resilience Programme (delivered by Shapes First in partnership with the client), and working in close partnership with the client’s Business Management teams, we:

  • Identified processes underpinning each Important Business Service.

  • Implemented a third-party business process modelling platform, BusinessOptix.

  • Developed a repeatable method and standards for the client’s process mapping activities.

  • Authored process maps for each business process, capturing resources dependencies, including dependencies on third parties, using the BusinessOptix process modelling platform.

  • Reviewed process maps with the firm’s process owners and secured sign-off to support compliance with the regulation.

  • Collaborated with the client’s Business Continuity Management and Technology Services teams to align BusinessOptix data with existing sources of system information

  • Performed a handover of the process mapping capability to the client’s own staff.

The outcome

As a result of our engagement, the client was able to:

  • Identify vulnerabilities to operational resilience of the firm’s Important Business Services, enabling planning of remediation, as well as dependencies on key third-party suppliers.

  • Use the process mapping data to support impact analysis during operational resilience scenario testing.

  • Develop an in-house capability to continue the process mapping activities, supported by their investment in the BusinessOptix platform.

The client also benefitted from increased collaboration between the Risk, Business Continuity Management, Procurement and Technology Services functions to support improved management of operational resilience, business continuity and operational risk.
